With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time to put those last-minute finishing touches on your costume and RSVP to that spooky soiree you’ve been looking forward to. But before you head out the door, take a moment to plan your party diet strategy in advance. While you may believe that you’re avoiding dental damage by skipping trick-or-treating and opting instead for an adult beverage, beware the dangers of drinking on your teeth and gums before you indulge!

Dehydration Dread

Dehydration may not seem like a huge deal, but not only can it cause some killer side effects when you’re drinking (think headaches and hangovers). It can also do its fair share of damage to your oral health. That’s because a dry mouth is a breeding ground for the harmful bacteria that causes cavities. Not only that, but without enough saliva to wash away food particles and sugars, you’re increasing that risk even further.

Spooky Sugar

While it may not seem like alcohol has a lot of sugar, it can often have quite a bit. Thus, if you were thinking you were consuming less than your favorite fun-sized treat by having that punch, beer, or wine, you could be making things much worse for your mouth than you anticipated.

Scary Stains

Alcohol is one of the most notorious causes of tooth stains, especially red wine. But believe it or not, those tannins that cause red wine to discolor your teeth are also present in beer and other types of liquor, so just because you’re not a wine drinker doesn’t mean your particular poison is safe!

Ghastly Gums

Did you know that according to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2 billion adults worldwide have some form of gum disease? Furthermore, did you know that alcohol can worsen it? In fact, even gums that don’t have gum disease could exhibit increased sensitivity after consuming alcohol, including bleeding, swelling, and redness!

Remember, Halloween is a fun holiday, so no matter what you decide to consume, it’s important to have a good time. If you do decide to indulge in an alcoholic beverage, be sure to drink plenty of water, and to brush and floss well before you head to bed that night.
