What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a versatile restoration that is used to assist teeth that have suffered intense damage or decay. They provide structural support to the tooth, shield it from further harm, and allow it to remain inside the mouth. In some cases, they can also be used to replace whole missing teeth.
The crown itself is a natural-looking cap that sits over the chewing surface of a tooth. Before it’s bonded, it’s designed to look, feel, and function as closely to the original tooth structure as possible. With excellent care, crowns can last for many years, serving as both a functional and a beautiful solution.
The Dental Crown Process
Our office is excited to offer CEREC same-day dental crowns! In the past, the process for planning out and placing a dental crown required multiple visits, but with the help of special CEREC technology and in-house milling machines, our team can design, create, and place your dental crown all within a single appointment.
Once we’ve decided that a crown is needed, we’ll take fully digital impressions of your tooth to make sure your restoration is tailored to your specific needs. This digital mockup is run through special software and then fabricated immediately afterward using beautiful, durable materials such as porcelain. While this is happening, your tooth enamel is gently reshaped to ensure the crown will fit properly. Once it’s ready, the crown is cemented in place, and you’ll leave with a natural-looking, functional crown that should serve you well for the foreseeable future.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown
The main benefit of receiving a dental crown is that it will restore your damaged or broken tooth to full function – every one of your teeth has a purpose and even having just one that’s compromised will present you with day-to-day challenges. Some other benefits that dental crowns have to offer include:
- Crowns are designed to match your other teeth in terms of texture and color, meaning they will look completely natural.
- If properly maintained, a dental crown has the potential to last for 10 – 15 years or so.
- A dental crown can often prevent the need for future complex or costly procedures, such as tooth extraction.
